ATHENS, Ga. — The No. 11-ranked Georgia men’s golf team fielded two squads that finished third and 11th in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on Monday at Athens Country Club.
On the par-72, 6,917-yard layout, “Georgia A” landed at 9-over 585, while “Georgia B” posted a 39-over 615. Team honors went to South Carolina at 14-under 562, the only quintet under par on Monday.
“It was a pretty challenging day,” Georgia coach Chris Haack said. “The golf course was in perfect condition, but the wind blew and really made it a challenge and really made [our players] have to think for [themselves] around the golf course. You know, that’s going to be beneficial to us going forward because we have to learn to be a little more patient.”
Sophomore Davis Thompson paced the Georgia A squad with a score of 2-under 142 as he came in third individually. South Carolina’s Will Miles captured the medalist title with a 36-hole score of 8-under 136.
“It was a long day,” Thompson said. “I knew scores were going to be high today, so I just had to stay patient and keep giving myself opportunities and take advantage of the par fives. I think that’s big out here, and I thought I did a pretty good job of that today.”
Junior Spencer Ralston and freshman Trent Phillips both finished 15th with scores of 3-over 147. Junior Trevor Phillips came in at 7-over 151, while freshman Will Kahlstorf wound up at 10-over 154.
For Georgia B, juniors Will Chandler and Tye Waller each posted a 6-over 150. Sophomore David Sikes scored 13-over 157, sophomore John Hilliard Catanzaro finished at 14-over 158, and freshman Braden Jones rounded out Georgia B with a 24-over 168.
