After an 18-hole qualifier for the U.S. Senior Open, five players tied at 1-under-par 71 – professionals Danny Elkins of Roswell, Ga., Sid Corliss of Cumming, Ga., and Richard Morton of Jacksonville, N.C., and amateurs Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga., and Jack Larkin of Atlanta, Ga. A playoff was needed to determine the three qualifying spots and two alternate positions.
Going back to the 17th hole, Larkin made birdie, Elkins made par and Hanzel made par to earn the three qualifying spots into the U.S. Senior Open. Corliss made bogey to finish as first alternate, while Morton double-bogeyed to finish as second alternate.
Cherokee Town and Country Club played to 6,919 yards and a par 72.
The 36th annual U.S. Senior Open Championship will be held at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, Calif., June 25-28. Entries were open to any male professional and to male amateurs with USGA Handicap Indexes not exceeding 3.4, who turns 50 on or before June 25. The U.S. Senior Open is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association.
