KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Augusta University women’s golf team sat in 12th place after 18 holes of play at the 2015 Palmetto Intercollegiate, but the Jaguars shaved 11 strokes from their team score on Tuesday (October 27th, 2015) and finished in fourth place out of 20 teams.
Hosted by College of Charleston, the 54-hole tournament concluded on a rainy Tuesday with an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start. The No. 46 Jaguars finished 22-shots over par on the par-72, 5,972-yard course and improved eight places from round one to round three. No. 40 Furman outlasted the competition and won the event at 11-over par.
Behind Furman was Chattanooga in second, No. 48 Campbell third, No. 46 Augusta fourth, and Illinois rounded out the top five in the 20-team field.
Jags Junior Eunice Yi surged the leader board and shot a 71 (-1) for her low round of the event to secure a tie for sixth overall. Yi notched three birdies on the scorecard and junior Jessica Haigwood matched Yi with three birdies to also card a one-under 71 and tie for 11th.
Teresa Caballer Hernani produced the lowest round for Augusta over all three days with a 70 (-2) in the third outing to finish in a tie for 23rd. Josefine Nyqvist turned in her personal-low round for the event with a 75 (+3) to finish 57th and freshman Cecilia Diez-Molinar carded a tie for 80th.
For the fall portion of their schedule, Augusta finished seventh at the Minnesota Invitational, ninth at the Mason Rudolph Championship, and took fourth at the Palmetto to secure three top-10 finishes.
Augusta returns in 2016 at the UCF Challenge in Orlando, Fla., at the Eagle Creek Golf Club on Feb. 7-9, 2016.
