AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Georgia College Golf squad saved their best for last, jumping three slots to finish seventh Tuesday at the 2018 Jay Jennison Cup, hosted by Flagler College. Junior Austin Mancilla (Lawrenceville, Georgia) finished with birdies on his final four holes to card a 66, the lowest score in the final round.
The Bobcats posted rounds of 295, 296 and 283, that final number good for third-best in today’s action.
Mancilla lept from 35th to sixth place as a result, finishing at two-under after rounds of 76, 72 and 66. The junior carded the first sub-par tournament by a Bobcat since Mancilla did the same at the Saint Leo Invitational Feb. 27, 2018.
Finishing at one-over was junior Drew Duffie (Evans, Georgia) taking 14th in the 77-golfer field. Duffie bookended a pair of 70s around a 77 in round two. The pairing of Duffie and Mancilla give GC Golf two top-20 finishers for the first time since last year’s Bobcat Invitational, where Justin Connelly (2018) took seventh and Mancilla finished 11th.
Third on the team and 41st overall was freshman Isaac Samples (Loganville, Georgia), carding rounds of 76, 72 and 75 for seven-over. Sophomore Daniel Davis (Columbus, Georgia) was 44th at eight over with rounds of 73-77-74, and junior Alex Wells (Evans, Georgia) rounded out the squad in 50th, posting a 77, 75 and 73 for nine-over.
No. 3 Barry University took the team title at a blistering pace of 34-under par, beating the field by 32 strokes. Of the six teams in front of the Bobcats, five are nationally-ranked squads as along with Barry was No. 7 USC Aiken, No. 14 Rollins College, No. 20 Lander University and No. 25 Young Harris College.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Oct. 1 at the UNG Fall Invitational in Dahlonega.
