ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia golfer Davis Thompson has been chosen as the Southeastern Conference Male Freshman of the Week, according to an announcement on Wednesday by the league office.
Thompson, a native of Auburn, Ala., earned the distinction for the second time. He previously was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 28.
Thompson finished third individually on Tuesday as the Bulldogs came in second as a team in the Linger Longer Invitational. Thompson had rounds of 63-69-74 for a total of 10-under 206. The 10-under figure is a career best for Thompson.
The 9-under 63 first-round loop tied the school record set by Peter Persons in the 1984 Rafael Alarcon Intercollegiate. Persons, who was in attendance during the first round, was a Georgia teammate of Thompson’s father, Todd, in 1985 and 1986. The 9-under 63 eclipsed the Great Waters course record of 8-under 64.
Thompson had 13 birdies and just one bogey as he held the 36-hole lead at 12-under 132. He finished the tournament with 15 birdies.
Thompson and the Bulldogs will return to action April 13-15 in the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn.
