ATHENS, Ga. — Two members of the Georgia men’s golf team will be competing in the United States Amateur Championship later this month.
Rising sophomore Spencer Ralston and incoming freshman John Hilliard Catanzaro advanced from sectional qualifying events for the U.S. Amateur, which will be held Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Ralston, a native of Gainesville, fired a 6-under 134 – including an opening-round 7-under 63 – to place third in the qualifier at Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course. Ralston qualified for the 2016 U.S. Amateur as well.
Catanzaro, who hails from Gadsden, Ala., placed second in the qualifier at Decatur (Ala.) Country Club with a score of 2-under 140. There was a three-for-two playoff, where Catanzaro birdied the first hole to secure his spot.
The Bulldogs will open the 2017-18 season in The Carmel Cup in Pebble Beach, Calif., Sept. 1-3.
