DICKSON, Tenn. — Led by All-SAA second team honors from Elizabeth Powell and Sophia Morettini, the Oglethorpe women’s golf team had a strong showing at the Southern Athletic Association Championships, earning fourth overall. The event, hosted by Sewanee at Greystone Golf Club, came to a close Sunday after three days of 54-hole championship golf.
The Stormy Petrels settled into fourth after the opening round on Friday and further established themselves in that position following Saturday’s and Sunday’s rounds. They finished just eight strokes back of third and 50 strokes ahead of fifth.
Powell (76-74-77) earned eighth overall and made the All-Conference second team for the second straight year. Morettini (77-77-75) finished right on Powell’s heels two strokes back in ninth overall, earning All-SAA for the first time in her career. Powell, at 11 over par, was five strokes back of the top five and 11 strokes off the medalist who shot even par.
Grace Daech and Katie Sulko tied for 20th as Oglethorpe’s next finishers, and Abrianna Carstens and Alexis Sinutko were both in the top 30.
Oglethorpe (320-317-317) as a team finished in the top five for the second straight and third overall event this season.
Championship Notes
- This marked the Petrels’ third straight fourth-place finish in the competitive Southern Athletic Association.
- Oglethorpe has finished in the top four eight times in the 12-year history of the championship event.
- Oglethorpe tallied 163 pars, ranking second in the field. Morettini accounted for 41 of those pars, leading the field in that category.
- Powell posted six birdies which ranked seventh.
- Powell and Morettini were fourth and sixth, respectively, on the par 4’s. Sinutko was seventh on the par 3’s. Morettini was eighth on the par 5’s.
