Princeville, Hawaii – Anders Albertson and Jacob Joiner each fired 7-under-par 65 Tuesday, November 5th, 2014, helping Georgia Tech shoot 24-under-par collectively and run away with the championship of the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational.
In winning its second tournament of the fall, 11th-ranked Tech posted a 54-hole total of 809, 55 strokes under par. The raw score and the relationship to par fell short by one stroke of the Yellow Jacket records of 808 (-56), recorded in the 2005 Waikoloa Intercollegiate on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Tuesday’s round of 264 (-24) was two strokes shy of the Tech’s 18-hole mark set in that same event, allowing the Yellow Jackets to expand a four-stroke lead at the start of the round to a 15-shot win over No. 28 Arizona State (824, -40). Michael Hines pitched in with a 6-under-par 66, and Ollie Schniederjans closed with a 4-under 68.
Louisville, ranked No. 42, finished third at 826 (-38), followed by Mississippi (833, -31) and McNeese State (840, -24). Ten of the 15 teams were under par for 54 holes on the 7,223-yard, par 72 Makai Golf Club.
“This was certainly one of our better rounds and tournaments,” said head coach Bruce Heppler in watching his team win for the 45th time in his 19-plus years at the helm. “This was a total team win. Our seniors played great, which is what we need to be successful.
Schniederjans, the world’s No. 1 amateur player, was unable to catch Pepperdine’s Frederick Wedel, a 2014 U.S. Amateur semi-finalist who carded a 69 Tuesday and won medalist honors with a 20-under-par score of 196. Schniederjans and San Diego’s Grant Forrest tied for second, three shots back, at 17-under-par 199. The Tech senior from Powder Springs, Ga., beat his previous best 54-hole total by two strokes.
Albertson put together his most complete performance since winning the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference title. The Woodstock, Ga., senior shot rounds of 68-67-65 for a 16-under-par score of 200, which bettered by one shot his ACC title-winning score.
Hines’ 66 lifted the Acworth, Ga., sophomore to his best career tournament score (10-under 206) and best finish, a tie for 10th, while Joiner, a freshman from Leesburg, Ga., earned his first top-20 finish (T19) with a 7-under-par 209.
