ATLANTA, GA -For the fifth time in his career, senior JJ Grey has been named the Sun Belt Golfer of the Month as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon (April 13th, 2016).
Grey led the Panthers with a 71.08 scoring average during the month of March. In total, Grey competed in 12 rounds, shooting par or better in nine of those rounds, including a stretch of seven straight under par.
He opened the month with a tie for 18th at the Tiger Invitational presented by Jason Dufner. The senior shot 77-72-71 (+4) to lead the Panthers to a fifth place finish at the event hosted by Auburn.
Grey followed with a tie for third at the prestigious Schenkel Invitational hosted by Georgia Southern that included eight teams ranked in the top 50 by GolfStat. Grey shot 69-65-70, leading the Panthers to an opening round 274 which was the second-lowest round in relation to par in program history. His second-round 65 was the lowest for any Georgia State golfer this year and tied for the eight-lowest round in program history. Georgia State finished sixth ahead of four teams ranked in the top 50. His 204 three-round total is tied for the fifth-lowest mark in school history.
Grey continued his solid play with a third place finish at the Furman Intercollegiate, leading the Panthers to their third-straight title at the event. He shot 69-71-68 to finish 8-under par and guided GSU to a second-round 275, the second-lowest round of the year and fourth lowest round in program history.
He closed the voting period with a tie for 17th at the Old Waverly Collegiate hosted by Mississippi State. Grey shot 76-72-73 (+5) as the Panthers finished fourth of 16 teams, earning wins over the other four Sun Belt schools in the event.
For the season, Grey has nine top 25 finishes in 10 events, including five top 10s (four third place finishes) and leads the team with a 71.53 scoring average. In the most up-to-date GolfStat ranking, he is No. 118 in the country.
Georgia State will return to the course April 24-27 for the Sun Belt Conference Championship at The Raven in Miramar Beach, Fla. The winner will receive the league’s automatic bid to NCAA Regional play in May.
