ATLANTA – Wyndham Clark held off the likes of Rickie Fowler, Scottie Scheffler and three-time FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy to win the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club for his second PGA TOUR victory in his last four starts. The 600 FedExCup points he earned from the win vaulted him to a career-high No. 4 in the FedExCup as he looks to make his first appearance at East Lake Golf Club and the TOUR Championship.
The TOUR Championship is the culmination of the PGA TOUR season and the FedExCup Playoffs where the TOUR’s top 30 global stars compete for the FedExCup and an $18 million bonus.
Now in his fifth full season on the PGA TOUR, Clark visited the winner’s circle for the first time in May at the Wells Fargo Championship, where he defeated an elite field by four strokes at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Ahead of the U.S. Open, where he had missed the cut in two previous appearances, Clark had already collected six top-10 finishes on TOUR the season.
The 29-year-old is now in position to qualify for his first TOUR Championship, with his career-high finish in the FedExCp coming during his rookie season in 2018-19 (No. 64).
Jon Rahm retains his lead in the FedExCup thanks to four wins on the season, but his lead has been shortened to 267 points following Scottie Scheffler’s third-place finish at the U.S. Open. Scheffler, with two wins to his credit, has finished inside the top 10 in 13 of his 17 starts on TOUR this season, including top-five results in his last five starts.
