WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. – The Augusta University men’s golf team opened the 2017 season at the Southwestern Invitational and junior Broc Everett guided Augusta to a seventh-place finish at North Ranch Country Club on Tuesday.
For the second straight season, Augusta began its spring season at Pepperdine’s home event near Malibu. With a slight rain in the air, the 14-team field began the event late on Monday on the par-72, 6,992-yard course for 36 holes. Play was suspended Monday due to darkness and round two was finished on Tuesday followed by the final 18.
Host Pepperdine had a 15-shot lead heading into the final round and won their event 21-under par. No. 6 Southern California placed second (-5) to join the Pepperdine Waves as the only teams to end below par. Lipscomb took third (+2), Washington State fourth (+4), and SMU fifth (+6).
Everett shot 69 (-3) in the first and second rounds for Augusta and followed it with a round-three 70 (-2) to place tied for third out of 84 golfers. He has shot in the 60s seven times this season.
The Jaguars sent Everett, seniors Jake Marriott, Viktor Edin, and Emmanuel Kountakis, and freshman Gustav Andersson. AU shot a 293 (+5) in round one and dropped a stroke with a round-three 292. The Jags were in seventh with 18 holes remaining and posted a 296 (+8) to card seventh at 17-over par.
Marriott shot 75 in the first and shot 74 (+2) in rounds two and three to finish tied for 34th at seven above par. Edin earned a tie for 43rd and Kountakis and Andersson tied for 63rd.
Augusta returns to the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on Mach 6-7 in Aiken, S.C.
