ALBANY, Ga. – With two golfers in the top five, the Georgia College Golf squad took sixth at the Hurricane Invitational Tuesday. Sophomore Daniel Davis (Columbus) finished third among the 75 golfers on the par-72, 7,024-yard Doublegate Country Club.
The finish was a career best for Davis, and the best by a GC Golfer since Thomas Hodges was runner up at the 2016 McDonough Cup. Davis carded rounds of 71, 67 and 74, finishing four-under and two strokes from second. Davis did his damage from distance, owning a tournament-low score of nine-under on the par-five holes. He also owned a tournament-best two eagles.
Junior Austin Mancilla (Lawrenceville) was a stroke behind in fourth, shooting a 75 followed by a pair of 69s. Mancilla’s Tuesday effort was a team-low. Mancilla tied for the tournament lead at even on par-three holes, and was six-under on the par-fives.
Third on the team and 44th overall was junior Drew Duffie (Evans). He shot a pair of 77s yesterday with a 76 today for plus-14. Duffie was consistent, with 37 pars for the three rounds. Classmate Alex Wells (Evans)was 19 over in 52nd place, saving his best for last with a 79, 82 and 74. Freshman Isaac Samples (Loganville) rounded out the Bobcat five with 57th place after rounds of 72, 82 and 83.
The Bobcats as a team managed a pair of 295s yesterday with today’s 293, good for plus-19. Southern Arkansas University took the team title at four-over, with No. 6 Young Harris College and host Georgia Southwestern State University tied for second. Individual honors went to GSW’s Vincent Norrman at 13-under par.
GC Golf is back in action Sunday, March 10 at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate in Valdosta.
