VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. — The Georgia men’s golf team dropped a 3-2 decision to Alabama on Tuesday in the SEC Match Play at Old Overton Club.
Senior Nicolas Cassidy capped a stellar week of play with a 5&4 decision over Alabama’s Tyler Lipscomb. The match was knotted after four holes, but Cassidy picked up wins on three of the five remaining holes before the turn. He closed the match out by taking Nos. 13 and 14.
During the stroke play portion of the tournament, Cassidy established his personal bests for finish (fifth) and total (11-under 199) and matched his career-low round (5-under 65). After two tournaments, Cassidy leads the Bulldogs with a scoring average of 67.67.
Senior Ben van Wyk topped Thomas Ponder 1-up for the Bulldogs’ other point.
In the other matches, senior Connor Creasy fell 3-up to Canon Claycomb, junior Caleb Manuel lost 5&3 to Nick Dunlap, and sophomore Buck Brumlow was topped by JP Cave 3&2.
The Bulldogs will return to action Oct. 3-4 in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
