The 32nd Yamaha Georgia Senior Open contested at the University of Georgia Golf Course saw the reigning Georgia PGA Player of the Year and defending champion, Craig Stevens, PGA of Dallas, post a 2-under par two-day total 140 to capture the championship. Stevens is a PGA teaching professional at Brookstone Golf & CC in Acworth. With the victory, he took home the $2,000 first place check.
Stevens entered the day tied for second place after an opening round of one-under par 70, but five shots behind amateur Bob Royak who plays out of St. Ives CC in Johns Creek. Royak fired a six-under par 65 in Monday’s first round. Royak stumbled out of the gates with a double bogey on the challenging opening hole and coupled with a birdie on the second hole by Stevens, the lead was quickly reduced to just two shots.
On the par five 12th hole, Royak once again made a double bogey after his second shot just came up short of the green and found the water hazard, while Stevens was able to get up and down for a birdie to take the lead for good.
Low amateur honors were shared by Royak and Rusty Strawn of Eagles Landing in Stockbridge. They both carded two-day totals of one over par 143 and finished in a tie for 3rd place with former Champions Tour player James Mason, PGA of Dillard.
Rounding out the top five were PGA head professionals Russell Smith, PGA of Bent Tree Golf Club in Jasper, and Winston Trively, PGA of Crooked Oak Golf Course in Colquitt who both shot championship totals of three over par 145.
