Amateur Aidan Kramer, a rising sophomore and a member of the Georgia Tech golf team, won the 2021 Yamaha Atlanta Open presented by Audi Atlanta and Golf Sign & Design on May 24 -25, 2021, at a hot and sunny Pinetree Country Club. Kramer defeated PGA Associates Chad Thomas from West Pines Golf Club, and Greg Edwards from East Lake Golf Club, in a one-hole playoff.
Kramer, who made par or better on 33 of the 36 holes, shot a pair of 69’s, finishing at 6-under par. Thomas and Edwards, the Co-Low Professionals of the event, joined Kramer on the par-5 ninth hole where the young Yellow Jacket hit a drive up the left center of the fairway leaving himself 187 yards in. He hit his 2nd shot within 10 feet where he then 2-putted for birdie to clinch the victory.
When asked about what it means to have his name etched in history on the Lyman R. Hunter Trophy, Kramer said, “It’s so cool. I was looking over the trophy a minute ago and to see some of the names on there. Bobby Jones, Davis Love Jr, it just means so much to get my name on that trophy.” Defending champion James Mason finished tied for 44th at 6-over par 150. The low round of the tournament was a 8-under 64 on Tuesday by PGA Associate Jin Chung of Chateau Elan Golf Club.
