VALDOSTA, Ga. – Freshman Wesley Hanson is off to a strong start in the spring for the Valdosta State golf team, and his efforts were rewarded accordingly, as he was named the Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Month for the month of February in an announcement by the league office on Thursday.
Hanson finished 45th out of 75 at the Matlock Collegiate Classic with three consecutive rounds of 2-over 74 among a field of nine top-25 programs. He matched that effort at the Saint Leo Invitational with a overall score of 6-over 222 for a 24th place finish out of 71 participant in a field of five top-25 teams.
“Wesley struggled a little in the fall, but he’s made a nice improvement so far this spring,” said Head Coach Jared Purvis on Thursday. “He has continued to work hard at it, and he is giving us some nice, solid scores right now. Each round, he has shown the potential to take it under par, and we’re hoping that happens pretty soon. He has been a nice contributor for this team during the spring.”
Valdosta State’s next scheduled tournament is the annual Southeastern in Valdosta, Ga. The event will begin on March 11th at Kinderlou Golf Club, and will run through Tuesday, March 13th. Live stats will be provided at www.vstateblazers.com.
