Johns Creek, GA — Defending champion Tim Weinhart, teaching PGA professional at Nuclear Golf at The Standard Club in Johns Creek, fired a four-under par 68 for a tournament total of seven-under par to win the Georgia PGA’s Professional Section Championship by two shots over Brian Dixon of Fox Creek Golf Course in Smyrna and Craig Stevens of Brookstone Country Club in Acworth. Weinhart claimed his fourth overall PSC in his storied playing career.
For his efforts, Weinhart won the first place check of $4,000 and will lead a strong contingent of nine Georgia PGA members who will compete next June at the 2013 PGA Professional National Championship, which will be conducted at Sunriver Resort in Oregon. The 2013 PGA PNC features a purse of over $500,000, with live television coverage of all four rounds on The Golf Channel. The PNC is presented by Club Car, Mercedes-Benz, and Omega and is supported by Titleist, FootJoy, Callaway Golf, Nike Golf, TaylorMade adidas-Golf Ashworth, and the PGA Tour.
Round one of the championship was washed out due to torrential rains, which hit the metro Atlanta area on Monday. The players played 36 holes today starting at 9:40 a.m. and completed the round just as darkness fell.
Also advancing to 2013 PGA Professional National Championship are Greg Lee of Chicopee Woods in Gainesville who finished tied for fourth place at four-under par 140 with Sonny Skinner of River Pointe GC in Albany. There was a four-way tie for sixth place which included; Tommy Brannen of Augusta Country Club; Bill Murchison of Towne Lake Hills Golf Club in Woodstock; Shawn Koch of the Country Club of the South in Johns Creek; and Georgia Golf Hall of Fame member Gregg Wolff of Willow Springs Golf Course in Metter round out the Georgia contingent.
The championship was conducted at The Standard Club in Johns Creek, an Arthur Hills design opened in 1987 and updated by Mike Riley in 2004. For the championship it the course was set up to play as a par 72 that plays to 7,003 yards.
The PGA National Professional Championship began in 1968 to provide additional playing opportunities for PGA Professionals. In more than three decades, it has become a showcase event for PGA Professionals, featuring some of the finest players in the Association. The low 20 scorers earn berths into the 95th PGA Championship, next August at the Oak Hills Country Club in Rochester, NY.
