PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Valdosta State golf team sealed a fifth place finish on Tuesday in the final round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at Calloway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga.
Valdosta State’s Matt Anderson locked up an eighth place finish after matching his opening round with an even par 72 effort, which led the sophomore to an impressive eighth place finish among 55 participants. After improving two spots on the leaderboard during his final round, the Blazer sophomore closed out with an overall score of 4-over 220.
Jake Harpe also showed huge improvement on the final day and matched Anderson’s even par 72 performance to jump five positions into the top 20 for a 17th place finish. Meanwhile, Davis Roche carded a 3-over 75 in the final round for a 19th place finish, and Eli Hendricks jumped three spots into a tie for 26th with a 2-over 74 effort during the third round.
The Blazers’ team effort resulted in a final score of 39-over 903 in the three-day event, just four strokes behind Mississippi College and just eight strokes behind third place finisher North Alabama.
ROUND 2/DAY TWO – Valdosta State slipped into fifth place on a rainy Monday during the second round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament in Pine Mountain, Ga. at Callaway Gardens.
Matt Anderson held among the tournament’s top 10 individual players after posting a 4-over 76 in his second round, while Davis Roche improved on his first round effort with a team-best 3-over 75. Jake Harpe delivered a round of 5-over 77, and Eli Hendrickscarded a 7-over 79.
As a team, the Blazers posted a round two score of 19-over 307 to fall behind North Alabama with a total tournament score of 34-over 610. Valdosta State will enter the final day of the tournament six strokes behind North Alabama, who sits in fourth place with a 28-over 604.
ROUND 1/DAY ONE – The Valdosta State golf team used a solid opening round at the 2017 Gulf South Conference Tournament to place themselves among the event’s top five teams on the leaderboard in fourth place among the 11 participating teams.
Matt Anderson posted VSU’s best round of the day, shooting an even par 72 on the 7,057 yard course at Callaway Gardens. Jake Harpe added a 4-over 76, while Eli Hendricks and Davis Rochefollowed with respective rounds of 5-over 77 and 6-over 78.
Valdosta State’s team score of 15-over 303 placed the team just seven strokes out of third place behind Lee, who finished the opening round with a score of 8-over 296 to fall in at third. Mississippi College currently ranks second after a score of 6-over 294, while West Florida holds the top spot at 7-under 281.
