SUGAR GROVE, Ill. Georgia’s Trent Phillips went 2-1-1 in his matches to help the United States regain the Arnold Palmer Cup this weekend.
Team USA posted a 33-27 decision over the International Team at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., on Sunday. The Palmer Cup uses a Ryder Cup-style format and pits American collegiate golfers against their international counterparts. The United States improved to 13-11-1 in the all-time series.
“We are all so proud to have been able to do this for the United States and for our schools,” Phillips said. “It was an amazing experience for each and every one of us. I am glad I was able to contribute by picking up some points for the United States. This was something that I will never forget.”
Phillips, a rising senior for the Bulldogs, capped his weekend with a 4&3 victory in singles on Sunday against Adrien Dumont de Chassart, a native of Belgium who plays for Illinois. In earlier events, Phillips teamed with LSU’s Latanna Stone for a 5&4 win over Penny Brown (Stirling/Scotland) and Allan Hill (Maynooth/Ireland) in mixed foursomes. Phillips and Stone also halved a mixed fourball match with Puwit Anupansuebsai (San Diego State/Thailand) and Virunpat Olankitkunchai (Maryland/Thailand). Phillips and Stone were four holes down with 10 to play before rallying to square the match. Phillips’ only setback was in foursomes as he and Nick Gabrelcik of North Florida lost 3&1 to Bo Jin (Oklahoma State/China) and Joseph Pagdin (Florida/England).
Georgia has a strong history with the Arnold Palmer Cup, which launched in 1997. Coach Chris Haack captained the 2002 and 2006 U.S. squads. Nick Cassini, Brian Harman, Russell Henley, Chris Kirk, and Adam Mitchell each played twice, while Erik Compton, Ryan Hybl, Lee McCoy, Michael Morrison, and Davis Thompson all played once.
Phillips ended the 2020-21 collegiate season with a win and four top-10 efforts. He was named First-Team All-SEC by the league’s coaches for the third straight season. Phillips wound up with a scoring average of 70.81.
