Country Oaks Golf Course, Public, 229-225-4333
Country Oaks….just the name itself suggests a tranquil, wooded setting that will no doubt provide a challenging course for all golf enthusiasts. Country Oaks is located just 4 miles from historic Thomasville, Georgia on Highway 122 (Pavo Road). The course is owned and operated by the City of Thomasville for the pleasure of residents and visitors alike. The warm, southern climate allows the course to be open year round.
Situated among 160 acres of wild azaleas, dogwoods, pines, oaks, and magnolias, Country Oaks has 18 holes with a par of 72. The course plays 6,284 yards from the back tees with a USGA rating of 71.3. While not a long golf course by any stretch, it is very narrow, so a premium is placed on accuracy off the tee-box.
Country Oaks and the City of Thomasville are committed to providing golfers with a quality golfing experience at an affordable price.
Glen Arven Country Club, Private, 229-226-1780
Founded in 1892, Glen Arven is one of the oldest clubs in America. Its 109 year history is rich and fascinating: Ben Hogan, Gene Sarazen, Byron Nelson and many other golf legends walked its fairways during the late 1930s when Glen Arven was a stop on the fledgling PGA tour. U.S. Women’s Amateur champions Beatrix Hoyt (1896, 1897, 1898), Frances Griscom (1900), and Thomasville native Mary Lena Faulk (1953) were all members of Glen Arven. The club has hosted many important golf championships over the years including three Georgia Women’s Amateurs and one Georgia Men’s Amateur. It was on the 18th hole of Glen Arven in 1956 that then president Dwight D. Eisenhower deemed himself fit enough to run for another term as President of the United States.
Today, Glen Arven’s attractions include a beautiful clubhouse, gourmet dining, a newly renovated swimming pool complex, a challenging and historic golf course, and one of the finest tennis facilities in the area.
