ATLANTA, G.A. – The Dogwood Invitational recognizes Steven Fisk of Stockbridge, Ga., and Daniel Thompson of Decatur, Ga., as this year’s recipients of the Wayne Reynolds Scholarship. Each year, The Wayne Reynolds Scholarship Foundation (WRSF) awards two qualified junior golfers with annual grants to two or four-year accredited colleges and universities, with support from The Druid Hills Golf Club Foundation.
“The Druid Hills Golf Club Foundation is proud to support these young students as they embark upon their college careers,” said Edward Toledano, The Dogwood Invitational tournament chairman. “The Reynolds Scholarship provides hardworking, talented students like Steven and Daniel with the opportunity to pursue their passions, and we are honored to have them as this year’s recipients.”
Through his hard work both on and off of the golf course in high school, Fisk has earned a spot on the golf team at Georgia Southern University in the fall. Fisk plans to pursue a degree in business administration with the ultimate goal to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional golfer. His passion for the sport began at age 6, when his parents built and operated a driving range. Since then, he has been relentless in his pursuit to excel in the sport. Additionally, Fisk has demonstrated leadership as team captain of the Creekside Christian Academy golf team and volunteers for Hosea Feed the Hungry, elderly care programs and as a reading mentor for elementary schools. Fisk also dedicates his free time to planning and conducting golf camps for junior and Autistic players. Fisk is currently ranked No. 65 of 2,573 of graduating players in 2015.
An incoming freshman at Georgia State University, Thompson plans to pursue a degree in criminal justice, setting the course for him to achieve his ultimate goal of working for the FBI. Thompson recently graduated with a 3.74 grade point average at Decatur High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the school’s varsity golf team. Thompson also is an active member of the Decatur First United Methodist Church Choir. A passionate volunteer, Thompson dedicates his time to the Red Cross Blood Drive, Tour Decatur, and his personal favorite, the Appalachian Service Project, where Daniel and members of his church travel to the Appalachian region to help low income families with home repairs.
The Reynolds Scholarship was founded by Wayne Reynolds, a longtime member of Druid Hills Golf Club. Wayne wanted to leave something special for the Club, a benefit to the community and wanted to give the members of Druid Hills something to be proud of. Wayne and his family chose to help junior golfers with an opportunity to attend college by establishing the four-year $3,000 annual Reynolds Scholarship awarded to students who qualify. Since its inception in 1998, the Reynolds Scholarship has been awarded to 30 junior golfers who have attended schools including Clemson, Columbus State, Georgia State University, Mercer University, Oglethorpe and University of Georgia.
