Atlanta’s Preston Topper, 14, who won the Standard Club’s Men’s Golf Championship in June, posted a spectacular 10-under score of 206 ( 64, 70, 72) to win his club’s medal tournament. No doubt Topper has become Georgia’s youngest private club champions after breaking the state’s record score for his age. His opening round of 64 for 18 holes tied the second lowest round ever recorded at the Standard Club’s championship course in Johns Creek.
Now rated by the Junior Golf Scoreboard among the top 20 young golfers in the world and second in Georgia for his age group, the 5-10, 180-lb. teenager was chosen two years ago to represent the US Kids Golf Ryder Cup match against an International junior team at the famed Pinehurst # 2 in North Carolina. He and his partner were low medalist during the competition where they shot 66 and led the US team to victory.
Preston has played competitive golf for 10 years and will enroll as a freshman at the private Atlanta middle school William & Reed in August. He is interested in playing college golf for either Georgia, Alabama or Auburn when he finishes his high school studies and plans to turn pro after completing his college.
The young golf prodigy, shown here holding one of the trophies he has won as a junior golfer, is often asked to join the top men golfers at the Standard Club to play with them which he enjoys. “I have played around 40 rounds of 18 holes in the 60’s. Most of the time I shoot in the 60’s, but I should because this is my home golf course,” Topper replied.
