Sonny Skinner fired an 8-under 64 in the second round at Valdosta’s Kinderlou Forest to finish with a 9-under 135 total and win the season-opening Georgia PGA Senior Division tournament Jan. 24-25.
Skinner, a long-time tour player with experience on the PGA, Web.com and Champions Tours who plays out of River Pointe in Albany, outdueled Marietta CC Director of Golf Stephen Keppler in a battle of multiple Georgia PGA Player of the Year award winners. Keppler closed with a 66 to tie for second at 137 with Rusty Strawn, who earned low amateur honors.
Strawn shared the first round lead at 68 with Doublegate pro Glen Herrell, who shot a second round 74 to finish fourth at 142. Callaway Gardens head pro Wyatt Detmer, who opened with a 69, tied for fifth at 143 with Don Marsh, who was second among the amateurs.
Tying for seventh at 144 was Bob Burk of Valdosta’s Stone Creek and amateur Jack Hall, with Brookstone instructor Craig Stevens and Houston Lake’s Chris Murman tying for ninth at 145.
The Georgia PGA Senior Division, which is sponsored by Cosamin ASU, plays next at Doublegate in Albany Feb. 22-23.
