CARROLLTON, Ga. – Brenda Pictor of Marietta won her third Georgia Senior Women’s Match Play Championship with a victory over Cheryl Grigg of Sea Island, 2 and 1, in the final match. The third annual competition took place at Sunset Hills Country Club, May 19-21.
Pictor quickly took the lead after a birdie on the first hole to go 1 up over Grigg. The defending champion would keep the 1 up advantage through three holes, then Grigg made her birdie putt to bring the match to all square through four holes. Pictor took back the lead on the next hole (five), and would keep it through seven holes played. Grigg won hole eight and the two both made par on nine, so the match was all square at the turn.
Pictor took a 1 up lead after 10 holes, then a 2 up lead after 11 holes. Grigg won hole 15 to bring her deficit to one with two holes to play. Pictor then made par on 18 to secure her third title in as many years this event has been played.
Pictor earned the top seed in match play after posting a 1-over-par 73 in the 18-hole stroke play round to determine seeds. She then notched victories over Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta, 4 and 3, in her quarterfinal match, and Susan Rheney of Greensboro, 4 and 3, in the semifinals.
Grigg, the 2-seed after scoring an 8-over-par 80 in her stroke play round, topped Debra Partridge of Roswell, 5 and 4, in quarterfinal round. She then eliminated Deb Jackson of Johns Creek, 6 and 4, in the semifinal round.
Karen Stewart of Columbus won the first flight with a win over JoAnn Setliffe of Woodstock, 6 and 5, in the flight’s final match. Stewart earned wins over Fran Coody of Perry, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinals, and Rochelle Weaver of Resaca, 1 up, in the semifinals.
The second flight went to extra holes, as Mary Czentnar of Rome topped Barbara Brown of Carrollton, 19 holes. Czentnar beat Cheryl Drewyer of Rome, 20 holes, in the quarterfinals, and Janet Norris of Eatonton, 6 and 4, in the semifinals.
In the third flight, Jo Ann Nelson of Bonaire defeated Sharon Thompson of Carrollton, 3 and 2. Nelson received a bye in the quarterfinals, then defeated Dale Perry of Carrollton, 7 and 6, in the semifinals.
Entries were open to female amateur golfers who are GSGA members and age 50 and above as of May 19. The field of 32 competitors were divided into four flights (eight players in each flight) based on stroke-play qualifying scores.
