Sophomore Jacob Arnett of the Oglethorpe men’s golf team was named to the Ping All-America Honorable Mention list Wednesday by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), marking the first All-America honor of his career. In addition, it’s the 28th time an Oglethorpe men’s golfer has earned GCAA All-America honors.
This caps off an outstanding season for Arnett, as he was a semifinalist for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award, a Ping All-South Region honoree, and an All-SAA First Team selection. He earned his first career individual medal at the prestigious Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational in March, and was the highest finisher among Stormy Petrels at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship in May, finishing eighth among players whose teams did not make the cut into the tournament’s final two days. He posted a 9-over-par 153 for the tournament after carding a 4-over 76 in Round 1 and a 5-over 77 in Round 2. He also earned a ninth-place finish at the Gordin Classic in September and finished in the top 20 in all but two tournaments he played all year leading up to the Division III Championship.
“Jacob played outstanding golf throughout the season,” said Oglethorpe Director of Golf Jim Owen, “including putting up the best tournament-long individual performance we had all year with his victory at Jekyll Island. He’s still only a sophomore, so I look forward to seeing what he can do as he improves over the next two seasons. It’s fantastic that he’s now included among this program’s fraternity of All-Americans!”
