CARROLLTON, Ga. — Louise Yu of Duluth defeats Anna Buchanan of Athens, 4 and 3, to win the Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship. The 19th playing of this competition took place at Sunset Hills Country Club, June 1-4.
Yu, who plans to play golf at Furman University, started fast as she went 3 up through three holes. The lead grew to 4 up through nine holes. Making the turn to the back side of the course, Yu continued her aggressive playing by claiming the next two holes (10, 11) to go 6 up with seven to play. Buchanan would build some momentum of her own with wins on holes 13 and 14, but Yu would seal the victory with the 4 and 3 final.
Yu advanced to the final match with wins on Friday over Emma Bell of Braselton (5 and 4) in the quarterfinals and the top seed Elisa Yang of Norcross (4 and 3) in the semifinals. In the round of 32, Yu beat Rebeca Garcia of Marietta (4 and 2) and Tyler Dawson of Woodstock (8 and 7) in the round of 16. Buchanan earned her berth in the Championship match by defeating Courtney Lowery of Greenville (3 and 2) in the quarterfinals and Harmanprit Kaur of Lawrenceville (3 and 2) in the semis. Buchanan defeated Diane Lim of Norcross (4 and 3) in the round of 32 and then Megan Carter of Canton (4 and 3).
With the win, Yu takes home the Louise Suggs Trophy, presented to the winner of the Georgia Women’s Match Play Championship.
In the Tournament division, Gracie Henderson of Norcross cruised to victory as she defeated Morgan Collins of Bremen, 9 and 8, for the division title. Henderson made it to the final match with wins over Jean Dawson of Suwanee (8 and 6) in the round of 16, Kay Yun of Johns Creek (3 and 2) in the quarterfinals, and Jill Rhodes of Sandy Springs (6 and 5) in the semifinals.
