DICKSON, Tenn.— Beck Lewis posted 3 under to lead the No. 4 Oglethorpe men’s golf team in the 2024-25 season opener Sunday at Greystone Golf Club. The site of the 2025 Southern Athletic Association Championship, Greystone’s event served as the SAA Preview with several other league opponents in the mix. Oglethorpe took runner-up in the field of eight teams.
Lewis, a two-time all-America selection, made the all-tournament team as the Stormy Petrels started this year’s campaign on a high note.
“We played some good golf, tempered by inconsistent play and rounds out of everyone,” Head Coach Jim Owen said. “Almost to a man, everybody had one great round and one average round. Very uncharacteristic for an Oglethorpe team, but the season is young and half our lineup is underclassmen.”
One of the underclassmen in the mix played a big role in the Petrels moving up to second at the end of the day. Jackson Hiller, last year’s SAA co-newcomer of the year, birdied his 17th and 18th holes, capping a 2 under effort Oglethorpe made as a team over the last two holes as Lewis, Andy Cruz and Colin Alexander all parred the last two.
Lewis (70-71) finished third while Hiller (76-69) and Sam Karman (69-76) finished T15. Alexander (74-73) took T24 and Cruz (77-75), a freshman, debuted in T36th. Ryan Dunn (71-76) rounded out Oglethorpe’s scoring in T24th.
Oglethorpe (285-287) shot 4 under as a team.
Representing Oglethorpe’s B team, Ryan Callaham (74-73) and Corbin Scott (73-77) debuted in T24 and T39, respectively. Diego Passos (77-73) also took T39.
Next on the schedule for Oglethorpe is the NCAA Preview, set for Sunday-Monday, Sept. 22-23, in Rochester, New York. The event will be 54 holes, including 36 at Midvale Country Club and 18 at Cobblestone Creek Country Club.
