EATONTON, Ga. – The Augusta University men’s golf team took 12th at the Linger Longer Invitational on Sunday at The Landing at Reynolds Lake Oconee. Augusta freshman Alex van Wyk paced the Jaguars individually in a tie for 15th.
Co-hosted by Kennesaw State and Mercer on the par-72, 6,991-yard course, the Linger Longer featured Augusta, Alabama, Charlotte, Georgia, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Louisville, Mercer, Ohio State, Penn State, South Alabama, Tennessee, Toledo, UNCG, and Virginia. The tournament format had tee times off holes No. 1 and No. 10 at 8:30 a.m. ET each day.
Five teams were ranked in the top 25 and No. 15 Georgia and No. 21 Liberty battled it out for the top spot on Sunday. The Bulldogs held off Liberty and took the team title at 19-under-par. Liberty fell to second place (-13), No. 2 Louisville finished third (-10), No. 3 Alabama fourth (-5), and UNCG fifth (-3).
Augusta was represented by juniors Gustav Andersson and McCullough Pickens, freshmen Alex van Wyk and Viktor Lindgren, and sophomore Alex Shead. Through round one, Augusta was tied for seventh with No. 24 Alabama at even par and moved to a tie for 12thafter the second outing on Saturday.
Van Wyk shot 69 (-3) and two 73’s (+1) to lead the Jaguars 1-under-par, while Shead signed for a tie for 44th at 6-over-par. Lindgren fired a 4-under 68 to start the tournament on Friday for AU’s low round of the event. He finished 61st (+10) and Andersson (T63, +11) and Pickens (T75, +16) rounded out Augusta.
The Jaguars host the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational April 6-7 at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.
