ATHENS, GEORGIA. – May 10, 2017, the Augusta University women’s golf team missed its first trip to the NCAA Championships by five strokes after finishing in ninth place at the NCAA Athens Regional on Wednesday afternoon at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
No. 3 Alabama was the highest ranked team in the field and the only team to shoot under par. They won the tournament 7-under par, after shooting 4-under par in the last two rounds. No. 8 Jennifer Kupcho from Wake Forest shot a 10-under 206 for the three-day event and won the individual title.
No. 11 Northwestern shot the lowest score on Wednesday and climbed the leaderboard three spots to take second (+7) behind the Crimson Tide. Michigan State remained in the top five all week and carded third (+8), No. 19 Baylor booked fourth (+13), No. 39 Clemson fifth (+20), and No. 35 North Carolina sixth (+22).
The low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams from each regional site advance to the national championships, May 19-24, 2017, hosted by Northern Illinois University at Rich Harvest Farms, in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
The tournament was the last collegiate competition for Augusta’s standout trio of seniors in Jessica Haigwood, Josefine Nyqvist, and Eunice Yi.
Augusta posted its second best round in the final day with a 295 (+7) and finished 27-over par, five shots out of six place. The Jags took ninth out of 18 teams on the par-72, 6,334-yard course led by freshman Charlotte Alran. Alran paced the team in day one and did the same in the finale as she shot a 73 (+1) to finish tied for 30th(+7).
The Jags’ other freshman starter, Linda Lundqvist, also shot a 1-over 73 in round three and finished tied for 33rd ( +8) along with Nyqvist. Nyqvist had three birdies in her final outing and turned in the low round for Augusta with a 71 (-1).
Haigwood and Yi rounded out the Jaguars, with Haigwood finishing tied for 43rd(+10) and Yi tied for 63rd (+14).
