SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The Augusta University men’s golf team finished their first tournament of the 2017-18 season in 11th place in the Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon at Desert Forest Golf Club.
Augusta improved by eight shots in the first two rounds, shooting a 298 (+10) in the second 18 holes. The team shot a 301 (+13) on Sunday to finish 41 shots over par in the 13-team field.
Arizona State outlasted Georgia Tech down the stretch and won the team title by one stroke at 7-under par. GT placed second (-6), Kent State third (-5), LSU fourth (-2), and Lipscomb fifth (+6) for the top finishing squads.
Alex Del Rey Gonzalez led Arizona State and took the individual trophy with a 10-under par final score.
Jaguar freshman Olof Gunnarsson sat in the top 10 of the individual leaderboard heading into the final round on Sunday and he finished 3-over par in a tie for 20th to lead Augusta. Gunnarsson shot consecutive rounds of even-par 72 and capped it off with a 75 (+3).
Also competing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Alex Shead shot 79, 74, 74 and took a tie for 43rd (+11), while senior Ryan Johnson (58th) and sophomore Gustav Andersson (59th) remained close in the standings. Johnson shot his low round of the tournament with a 74 (+2) in round three to end 17-over par, while Andersson finished 18 shots above par. Senior Broc Everett concluded Augusta in a tie for 66th (+20).
The Jaguars head to the Erin Hills Invitational, hosted by Marquette, Oct. 1-3 in Erin, Wis.
