ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels finished 4 under par to claim sixth place in this year’s NCAA Fall Preview. At 4 under par, Oglethorpe shot one stroke better than at last spring’s national championship which saw the team earn third in the national field. Jackson Hiller led the way finishing fifth individually.
Oglethorpe played 36 holes at Midvale Country Club on Sunday, shooting 6 under and 2 over. Then, on Monday the Petrels went to Cobblestone Creek Country Club for the final 18 holes where they shot even par as a team.
Hiller recorded the highest finish, taking fifth place after shooting 7 under par. He was six under on day one, and remained 3 under after day two and was tabbed for runner-up. Hiller shot 3 over on the final day which knocked him down three spots, but enough for a top-five finish.
Beck Lewis jumped 29 places on the final day after shooting 3 under par, a recovery from his score of 4 over from the day before. He shot even on the first day and ultimately placed 25th at just 1 over par.
Sam Karman and Andy Cruz also made major jumps on the leaderboard in the final round, finishing 30th and 37th respectively. Karman was only 1 over par on the first two rounds, then shot even on the final day. Cruz moved up 17 spots after shooting even par on the last day, recording a final score just 4 over.
Ryan Dunn also made an advancement on the final day, squeezing into the top 50 at just six over par.
The Stormy Petrels will be at it again on Sunday-Monday, Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, at the Gate City Invitational. Then, Oglethorpe will host the West Pines Collegiate in Douglasville, Georgia, on October 7-8.
