Roswell, GA — Hank Smith, the head PGA professional at Frederica Golf Club on St. Simons Island, won his first Yamaha Atlanta Open presented by Bushnell/Bolle played at Atlanta National Golf Club in Milton. Smith fired a round of four-under par 68 for a two-day total of six-under par 138, and defeated Jeff Gotham head PGA professional at Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell by three strokes.
Smith went out in one-under par 35, and then made birdies on four of his first five holes on his inward nine before a band of heavy thunderstorms caused a one hour and fifty minute delay. After play resumed, Gotham was the only player in the field who had a chance to catch Smith, but was unable to make birdies on his last two holes. For his efforts, Smith took home the Lyman R. Hunter trophy and the first place check for $4,000.
Low amateur honors went to noted amateur Billy Mitchell of Roswell who finished the championship at one-under par 143 and an overall tie for 5th place. Defending champion, amateur Cory Griffin of Canongate at Georgia National, finished tied for 31st place at 6-over par 150. To stay up to date with Georgia Golf News sign up for our newsletter below.
