GAINESVILLE, F.L. – The No. 35 GRU Augusta women’s golf team tied for eighth with No. 28 Kent State at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational on Sunday afternoon at 76-over par with a 916 in the 15-team field.
GRU sat in third place after the first round of play, but couldn’t maintain a top-five spot in the field that had nine ranked in the top 50. No. 11 Arizona led the entire event and held on to win the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 879 (+3). No. 33 Florida took second, No. 37 Florida State third, Denver fourth, and No. 21 UCF fifth.
Arizona’s Manon Gidali won the individual title with a 215 (+5), after she shot even par in round three to edge NC State’s Lindsay McGetrick by one stroke.
Jags sophomore Teresa Caballer Hernani shot the second-best round on the weekend for Augusta with a round-two 71 (+1). Caballer Hernani had four birdies total with three on the back nine to finish tied for 10th, the best finish for GRU.
Sophomore Eunice Yi recovered from round two and dropped 10 strokes with her round-three 74 (+4) to finish the event in 25th place. Sophomore Jessica Haigwood had one birdie on the score card and shot a 77 (+7) to tie for 35th overall, her second best round of the three-day tourney.
Jaguar sophomore Josefine Nyqvist and freshman Maggie Ashmore each shot 11-over 81’s in the third and final round, with Nyqvist finishing tied for 46th and Ashmore 76th.
