BRASELTON, GA. – Deb Jackson of Johns Creek and Alice Richardson of Alpharetta posted a 2-under-par 140 to win the Georgia Women’s Team Championship. Finishing two strokes back with runner-up honors was the tandem of Debra Partridge of Roswell and Bobbie Suttler of Marietta at even-par 142 (73-69). The 29th annual competition took place Monday and Tuesday, September 22-23, 2014.
Jackson and Richardson began the Women’s Team Championship with a 1-under-par 70 in round one to take a three-stroke advantage into the final round. After combining to post another 1-under-par 70 on Tuesday, the 2-under total was enough to seal the deal for the duos first title.
Finishing third overall in the Championship Gross division was the duo of Mary Holmes of Cleveland and Ginette Spinucci of Stone Mountain at 2-over-par 144 (75-69). Two tandems tied for fourth at 4-over-par 146 – Betsy Butler of Atlanta/Phyllis Foisy of Statham (76-70) and Barbara Brown of Carrollton/Jirapon Carlson of Macon (73-73). Elaine Carsel and Nancy Hendrix, both of Athens, finished sixth at 6-over-par 148 (76-72). In seventh place was the duo of Cheryl Drewyer and Jodie Shepard, both of Newnan, at 7-over-par 149 (78-71). Jolena Bryant of McDonough partnered with Mattie Peterson of Ellenwood to finish eighth at 17-over-par 159 (82-77). Rounding out the Championship Gross division was the team from Savannah, Sandy Hammond and Martha Reardon, at 31-over-par 173 (91-82).
Spinucci’s third-place finish this year marks the first time since 2004 that she did not either win the championship or finish runner-up. Spinucci teamed with Marilyn Nolan-Johnson of Marietta to win in 2005 and 2006, and claimed runner-up honors in 2007. In 2008, she captured the title with Brenda Pictor of Marietta. She then would win the next three championships, 2009-2010-2011, with Danielle Davis of St. Simons Island. After a runner-up finish with Davis in 2012, the twosome notched another victory 2013.
In the Net division, Nancy Freeman and Beaty Maffett, both of Atlanta, teamed up to win flight one at 5-under-par 137 (65-72). In flight two, Sandra Avant and Beth Turner, both of Sandersville, finished on top at 1-over-par 143 (66-77). Fran Clinkscales of Clayton and Margaret Rodbell of Atlanta won flight three at 2-over-par 144 (67-77).
Chateau Elan Golf Club played to 5,683 yards and a par 71 for the Championship division and to 5,183 yards and a par 71 for the Net division. Entries were open to two-person teams of female amateur golfers who were at least 18 years old as of September 22, belong to a GSGA Member Club, have a maximum handicap index of 31.9 and a maximum team differential of no more than eight strokes.
