LOS CABOS, MEXICO – With three Panthers among the top 10, Georgia State earned a three-stroke win on Tuesday (October 6th, 2015) at the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate in Los Cabos, Mexico. It marked the first win of the season for the Panthers and the sixth in the last two-plus years.
Junior Nathan Mallonee earned a career-best third-place finish following an even par final round that included four birdies to finish the 54-hole event at 5-under par.
Sophomore Alexander Herrmann added a final round 72 with four birdies to finish in eighth-place at 1-under par for 54-hole event.
Senior J.J. Grey added his second top-10 finish in as many tournaments with a ninth-place result. Grey also shot 72 with four birdies in the final round to finish at even par for the event.
“Really proud of the way the way the guys played this week,” head coach Joe Inman said. “We played consistent golf and that is what it takes to win. We know we can make a lot of birdies as a team, but we need to limit the big numbers. In the final round, we only had one. That is a sign to me that this team is moving in the right direction.”
Georgia State was playing in just its second tournament ever outside the country and the first in Mexico.
Sophomore Max Herrmann also shot 72 on Tuesday with a pair of birdies to finish the event 13-over and tied for 42nd.
Freshman Nick Budd rounded out the line-up with a final round 4-over 76 to finish the tournament at 4-over and tied for 18th.
Georgia State also brought a “B-Team” to Mexico which finished the event in 10th place at 54-over. After shooting 312 and 306 the first two rounds, the Panthers finished with a round of 300 on Tuesday.
Freshman James Kyles shot the low round of final day for the group with a 2-over 74 to finish at 15-over and in 46th place.
Freshman Nathan Williams and redshirt-freshman Hayden Poole each shot rounds of 75 on Tuesday. Williams finished in 49th at 18-over par, while Poole finished tied for 50th at 20-over. Poole started his round with four-straight birdies on Tuesday.
Freshman Sam Asbury and sophomore Sean Murphy shot final round 76s. Asbury, making his collegiate debut, tied for 31st at 9-over par, while Murphy finished tied for 50th at 20-over.
Georgia State earned a three-stroke win over in-state rival Georgia Southern which finished at 3-under. Sun Belt foe UT Arlington finished third at 3-over, followed by UL Lafayette and co-host Santa Clara tying for fourth at 5-over.
Santa Clara’s Hayden Shieh shot a final round 68 to finish at 9-under par for the tournament and earn a two-stroke win over teammate Tyler Kertson who finished at 7-under. Mallonee took third place honors at 5-under, followed by UT Arlington’s Zach Galliford and UL Lafayette’s Haraldur Magnus in fourth at 4-under.
Georgia State will return home for the fifth annual AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic at Berkeley Hills Country Club in Duluth, Ga.,Oct. 11-13. Admission is free to the public.
