LOS CABOS, Mexico – The Georgia Southern men’s golf team played its final nine holes of the third round a combined 2-under-par on the Ocean Course Tuesday (October 6th, 2015) to finish second at the Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate.
It was the Eagles’ second consecutive runner-up finish, and they have placed first or second in all three tournaments this fall. Georgia Southern (-3) was three strokes behind winner Georgia State (-6), and six strokes ahead of third-place UT Arlington (+3).
O’Toole (-3) finished the tournament with 15 birdies and shot a 1-under-par 71 today to tie for sixth with teammate Jake Storey (-3), who also shot a 71 today. Archer Price posted a 72 today and tied for 15th, and Henry Mabbett carded a 75 and tied for 11th. Jonas Vaisanen, who played as an individual this week, logged a 75 and tied for 21st, and Steven Fisk shot a 77.
The story
Eagle counters O’Toole, Storey and Price combined to shoot 4-under on the back nine of the Ocean Course today. O’Toole shot 3-under on the back nine with four birdies and a bogey, and the junior was 3-under in his final five holes. Storey had a string of 15 straight holes in which he scored par or better with three birdies during the stretch. Price had four birdies and four bogeys today and played his final four holes 1-under. Mabbett had three birdies on his final seven holes and would have been lower if not for a triple bogey on the par-5 15th hole.
Quotable from Coach Carter Collins
“Finding a way to compete for a win when you are not playing your best is a great characteristic to have, and this team showed that this week. Playing two different courses with three different winds can be challenging, but we adjusted well every day and put three solid team scores on the board to finish runner-up in a field made up of teams from all across the country. Overall, it was not the finish we were looking for, but we learned a lot about ourselves this week. We will keep trying to improve and be ready for our next event in a couple of weeks. Cabo was a great experience, and we really enjoyed the courses and fantastic views.”
