GREENVILLE, N.C. – The GRU Augusta women’s golf team took control of the leader board early and cruised to a 19-stroke lead over the 18-team field to win the 2014 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate with a team score of 876 (+12) after the final round at the Greenville Country Club on Tuesday October 14, 2014, Jaguar sophomore Jessica Haigwood finished second overall at even par (216), sophomore Josefine Nyqvist carded third, and Teresa Caballer Hernani tied in fifth while Eunice Yi tied for eighth.
The Jaguars’ team victory is their first since they won the Rebel Intercollegiate last season on April 4-5 in Oxford, Miss. The Jaguars beat out Kennesaw State, who took second, by 19 strokes – as GRU remained at 12-over par from day one to day two. Haigwood, Nyqvist and Caballer Hernani were all named to the All-Tournament team for the efforts through Monday and Tuesday.
The Jaguars led the field by 11 strokes after six holes and stayed on the pursuit of a blowout victory as Haigwood fired a round-three 70 (-1) – the lowest score our of all six GRU competitors at the two-day event. She birdied once on the front nine and three more times on the back to lead the Jags for the first time in the 2014-15 season.
After leading the event yesterday, Josefine Nyqvist posted a 74 in round three to secure second place by herself. Nyqvist finished her third tourney of the fall season at one-over par for a combined 217. Caballer Hernani placed the highest she has all season with a tie for fifth after a round-three 73, putting her at five-over par for the tourney.
Sophomore Eunice Yi posted a one-under 71 today and nabbed a tie for eighth at six over collectively. She notched three birdies, while rookie Lexi Bollant, making her first start in the lineup of five, shot an 84 in round three to tie for 76th respectively. Bollant had four birdies in her first collegiate tournament with the team. GRU individual competitor Shannon Pak finished tied for 46th overall with a final round 80.
Hosted by the East Carolina, the two-day 54-hole event began with 36-holes on Monday with 18 teams teeing off in a shotgun start. The field consisted of Appalachian State, No. 64 Elon, Gardner-Webb, No. 33 GRU Augusta, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, No. 51 Kennesaw State, Longwood, Marshall, No. 44 Middle Tennessee, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, Western Kentucky, William & Mary and Winthrop.
The Jags play their last fall tournament on October 26-28, 2014 at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
