KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – The Georgia Regents University Augusta men’s golf team shot an overall 881 (+17) and finished tied for fifth with Jacksonville State in their last tournament of 2014 in the Wendy’s Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club on Tuesday, November 4th, 2014.
Winthrop held on for the team victory by shooting even par (864) for the event, while Georgia Southern carded second at four-over par, and Marquette and Missouri shared third at 14-over. The Jaguars finished even with Jacksonville State at 17-over par (881).
Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes recorded a Turtle Point course record today with a round of 63, nine-under par. USC Upstate’s Ryan Cornfield shared co-leader honors with Wolfes at six-under par.
Junior Robin Petersson shot the low round for the Jaguars in the final 18 holes with a one-under 71 – highlighted by six birdies. Petersson placed in the top 10 for the second event in a row with a tie for ninth after shooting a one-over 217 overall. Jake Marriott dropped two strokes from round two with a 76 (+4) in round three to finish tied for 15th – second best for the Jags. Marriott posted a four-plus 220 after 54 holes and carded his third top-20 finish of the season.
Junior Maverick Antcliff improved in each round, shooting an 80 to start the tourney on Sunday, but carding a 69 (-3) on Tuesday for the best GRU round of the day to finish tied for 23rd. It was Antcliff’s fourth round in the 60’s this season and his fifth top-25 finish of 2014. GRU’s Jackson Stroup finished 35th with a round-three 75. He shot a 224 (+8) for the event, while freshman John Yi came in tied for 79th after he shot his second straight 76 (+4) of the tourney.
The tourney, hosted by Charleston Southern, welcomed 20 teams to the par 72, 7,061-yard course for a three day, 54-hole event. The field includes Charleston Southern (Host), Appalachian State, Bethune-Cookman, Coastal Carolina, Creighton, Gardner-Webb, George Washington, Georgia Southern, GRU Augusta, High Point, Jacksonville State, Marquette, Missouri, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, USC Upstate, Temple, Western Kentucky, and Winthrop.
The Jaguars return to the course next semester at the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate from March 9-10, 2015 at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
