CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Jaguars combined to shoot seven rounds of par or better, while junior Maverick Antcliff shot consecutive rounds of 69 to give GRU Augusta a fourth place finish in their first event of the 2014-15 season at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of North Carolina on Sunday, September 14th, 2014.
The host-team Tar Heels remained ahead of the 18-team field and finished first by 26-strokes under par. UNC Greensboro and East Carolina were the closest behind at 3-under par, while GRU Augusta, Kennesaw State, and Elon held even for fourth. UNC’s Ben Griffin won the individual title at 10-under par (67, 69, 70 – 206), while GRU’s Antcliff tied for second with Furman’s Bryce Howell at 8-under par.
Leading the Jaguars for all three rounds, junior Maverick Antlciff remained in the top 10 for the entire tournament shooting below par three times.
Sophomore Jake Marriott battled with himself all day with four birdies and four bogeys coming in on the scorecard. On the turn, Marriott found his stride as he fired three straight birdies to back to one-under. A bogey on the back nine gave him his second even-par 72 and a T14 to finish second for the Jags.
Playing his first tournament after taking a redshirt for all of 2013-14, junior Robin Petersson was 4-under par after he birdied No. 6 and went back-to-back on No. 13-14. Petersson finished at 1-over par after picking up a couple of strokes on his last four holes – good for a T38. Broc Everett and Jackson Stroup rounded out the Jags, with Everett finishing tied for 56th and Stroup tied for 68th.
The Jags hit the course again in the Jack Nicklaus Invitational on the Scarlet Course at the Ohio State Golf Club in Columbus, Ohio from Sunday-to-Monday, Sept. 28-29, 2014.
