GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Georgia College golf team won the 2014 Bearcat Invitational Golf Classic by eight strokes with an 873-team three-round total Sunday at the Patriot at Grand Harbor Golf Course. Senior Bryan Fox (Roswell, Ga.) finished tied-second overall and freshman Nicolas Falkinhoff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) finished fourth overall with a 212 and 214, respectively.
The Bobcats entered the second day of the contest in first place, scoring 682 after the first two rounds Saturday. Georgia College’s 290-team score was the best of the field of 17 Sunday, and its 288 score from the second round Saturday was also the best.
“It’s been a work in progress,” said Georgia College head coach Jimmy Wilson. “We know we have a good team and we’ve seen glimpses of it up to now, but hopefully it’s just now all coming together and at the right time.”
Overall, the Bobcats had three players in the top-20 out of a field of 90, with one of those not factoring into the team scoring.
Fox finished four-under-par, saving his best round for last. The senior, who has finished second overall three times this season, shot a four-under 68 Sunday. Fox was only one of two golfers in the tournament to shoot two rounds in the 60s.
Falkinhoff got progressively better every round in finishing fourth overall with a two-under-par 214-total. The freshman was one of three to score in the 60s Sunday with a three-under-par 69. He improved from his first round 73 and second round 72.
Another freshman, Conner Albright (Macon, Ga.) finished tied-24th overall after shooting a four-over-par 76 Sunday. It was Albright’s highest round after shooting a 74 and 75 Saturday, respectively.
Senior Victor Monte (Chantilly, Va.) finished tied-39th overall with a five-over-par 77 Sunday. His second round 79 score didn’t figure in the Bobcat scoring as junior Ryan Trocchio’s (Norcross, Ga.) second-round 72 did. Trocchio’s other non-scoring rounds included an eight-over-par 80 Sunday, and a seven-over-par 79 in the first round.
Sophomore David Sullivan (Woodstock, Ga.) played the course as an individual with good results. Sullivan’s scores were good enough for a tied-17th overall finish. Of all the Bobcat golfers, he was the most consistent with three two-over-par 74s for a 222 total.
The Bobcats look to take the momentum from this win into the 2014 Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championship April 18-19 in Callaway Gardens, Ga. The PBC Championship is hosted by Columbus State University.
