JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – Georgia College Golf’s Austin Mancilla (Lawrenceville) took home first place at the 2019 Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship at Rivermont Golf Club.
Thirty-two players battled for the championship put on by the Georgia State Golf Association.
Defending champion Matthew Hayes was the No. 1 seed while Mancilla was No. 16. After the round of 32, Mancilla won 4&3 over No. 17-seed Jon Klotz, a Division I Kennesaw State University golf alum.
During the round of 16, Mancilla was paired with Hayes, a Division I Furman University golf alum, and defeated him 1-up to move onto the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Mancilla and No. 24-seed Tevis Upton were tied heading into 18 holes and still tied at the 19th hole. After 20 holes, Mancilla took down Upton, a 2014 inductee to the Valdosta State Athletics Hall of Fame, advancing to the semifinals.
Mancilla won hole No. 17 to defeat No. 12-seed and Division I Georgia State University sophomore Connor McKinnon 2&1 to advance to the finals.
