ATHENS, G.A. — Georgia junior Manuela Carbajo Ré secured an individual invitation to compete in the Raleigh Regional of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships on May 7-9, 2015. The NCAA field was announced on Monday evening (April 27th, 2015)
“It’s an honor for Manuela, and I know she’s excited for the chance to compete for a national championship,” head coach Josh Brewer said. “You want to be playing your best golf of the season right now and she’s certainly doing that. She’s finished in the top-15 individually in fiveof six events this spring. We’re happy to have her represent us.”
The Regional will be hosted by N.C. State at the Lonnie Pool Golf Course.
Carbajo Ré is one of six individuals who will compete along with golfers from 18 schools in Raleigh. Six schools and the top three individual finishers who are not members of those teams will advance from the Regional to the NCAA Championships on May 22-25 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, F.L.
Carbajo Ré has recorded three top-10 and six top-20 individual finishes in nine tournaments during the 2014-15 season. She won medalist honors at the Lady Bulldog Individual Championship in February and also finished third at Seton Hall’s Pirate Invitational and tied for seventh in stroke play qualifying at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. Most recently, Carbajo Ré tied for 12th at the SEC Championships.
Georgia will not compete in the team portion of the NCAA Championships for just the second time ever. The Bulldogs have taken part in every edition of the NCAAs since 1983. In 1982, the year both the AIAW and NCAA held national championships, Georgia chose to play in the final edition of the AIAWs.
The Bulldogs are expected to vault back into the national spotlight in the fall. Georgia loses only one senior from this year’s team and anticipates major contributions with the arrival of a heralded recruiting class. Three of the top-15 high school seniors in the current Golfweek Girls’ rankings – No. 6 Bailey Tardy, No. 8 Jillian Hollis and No. 12 Rinko Mitsunaga – will join the roster this fall.
