BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Georgia men’s golf team concluded play Tuesday in the SEC Match Play Presented By Jerry Pate by knocking off LSU in the consolation match.
Playing Shoal Creek Club’s par-72, 7,400-yard layout, the 16th-ranked Bulldogs posted a 4-0-1 decision over the Tigers. Senior Trent Phillips, juniors Nicolas Cassidy and Ben van Wyk, and freshman Buck Brumlow won their matches and freshman Maxwell Ford was all square in his.
“The key lesson in match play is that good teams and good players don’t give up,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack. “I was pleased with the way our guys kept grinding. In match play, you have to be mentally tough and know that every shot matters. Being under this kind of pressure was definitely a good experience for us given that the SECs and NCAAs have match play portions. We won three matches and we were right there in the one we lost, so we have plenty of positives to build on moving forward.”
Cassidy and Brumlow each had three wins in the tournament, followed by Ford and van Wyk with 2.5 each, and Phillips with two.
On Tuesday, Phillips and Cassidy each won 4&3 against Michael Sanders and Nicholas Arcement, respectively. Van Wyk was a 3&2 victor over Garrett Barber, while Brumlow topped Trey Winstead 2-up. Ford and Cohen Trolio wound up all square.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the fall portion of the schedule Oct. 25-26 in the Eagle Point Intercollegiate in Wilmington, N.C.
