GREENSBORO, N.C. – Defending individual champion Nick Budd shot a final round 70 to record a top 10 finish and lead the Georgia State men’s golf team to a sixth-place result at the UNCG Grandover Collegiate at the Grandover Resort.
A year after winning the event, Budd tied for ninth at 4-over. He led the Panthers in the final round as Georgia State shot a 10-over 298 to finish the 54-hole event at 33-over par.
“Nick played some nice golf today,” Director of Golf Joe Inman said. “However, overall we did not play to the level that we are capable of this week. We didn’t finish well today which cost us at least one spot in the standings. We also made too many big numbers this week. Hopefully we can clean up that stuff heading into our final event of the fall.”
Junior Severin Soller earned his third-straight top 15 finish following a final round 76. Soller tied for 14th at 6-over par.
Senior Alex Herrmann shot a 78 on Sunday and finished tied for 33rd at 12-over, while junior Nathan Williams tied for 46th at 15-over after also shooting 78 on Sunday. Senior Max Herrmann rounded out the line-up with a 2-over 74 in the final round to finish at 18-over par.
Sophomore Josh Edgar, who competed as an individual this week, shot a 5-over 77 in the final round to tie for 57th at 19-over par.
Northwestern shot a final round 2-under 286 to finish at 9-over par and win the tournament by two strokes. No. 24 North Carolina finished second at 11-over par, with No. 28 Duke coming in third-place at 15-over par. No. 31 NC State finished fourth at 26-over, with host UNC Greensboro rounding out the top five at 31-over par.
Northwestern’s Dylan Wu, ranked No. 95 by GolfStat, earned low medalist honors at 7-under par following a final round 70. North Carolina’s Ben Griffin finished in second-place at 3-under par, with NC State’s Stephen Franken and Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden tying for third at 1-under par. Alex Smalley, ranked No. 42, rounded out the top five at even par.
Georgia State will conclude the fall at The Battle at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C., Nov. 3-4. The event was originally scheduled as The Invitational at The Ocean Course in September but was postponed due to a hurricane.
