DAHLONEGA, Ga. – The Georgia College Golf team took runner-up honors at the 2018 UNG Fall Invitational Tuesday, thanks in large part to a huge final day. The Bobcats finished 17-under par, including a 277 in round three, second best in the field.
The Bobcats shot rounds of 280, 290 and 277 for 17-under on the par-72, 6,967-yard Achasta Course, by Reynolds. They finished just nine strokes off the lead by No. 18 Young Harris College.
The Bobcats last posted a sub-par tournament score as a team at the 2016 UNG Fall Invitational, going for five-under. The last time a Bobcat Golf team had a score this low in relation to par was the 2010 Lander Bearcat Golf Classic, another runner-up finish at 24-under par.
GC Golf landed three in the tournament’s top-10 and four in the top-20, with junior Austin Mancilla (Lawrenceville) leading the way. Mancilla had rounds of 69, 68 and a 71 today to take fourth in the 49-golfer field at eight-under, earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
Second on the team and fifth overall was freshman Isaac Samples (Loganville). The rookie shot a 71 today to go with a 67 and 71 yesterday, finishing seven-under overall.
Taking ninth, Daniel Davis (Columbus) had a four-under effort, the first career sub-par tourney for the sophomore. He posted rounds of 70, 75 and a 67 today. That 67 was the third-best score posted by the entire field in the final round and a career-best for Davis.
The last time the Bobcats had three individuals finish in the top-10 was the 2012 Armstrong Pirate Invitational, where head coach Patrick Garrett was first, Ryan Trocchio third and Taylor Smith seventh.
Coming in at 19th was junior Drew Duffie (Evans) owing a two-over score. He had rounds of 74 and 76 yesterday but a beautiful 68 today. Today’s score matches Duffie’s career best. Classmate Alex Wells (Evans) finished at plus-14 in 36th after rounds of 78 and a pair of 76s.
Freshman Hilton Beck (Macon) played the course as an individual for the Bobcats, finishing tied with Wells after rounds of 80, 78 and 71.
The University of West Georgia’s Samuel Jones took individual medalist honors at 12-under par.
The Bobcats are back in action Monday, Oct. 15 at the Copperhead Championship in Palm Harbor, Florida.
