LOCUST GROVE, Ga. — Bill Leonard of Kennesaw posted a final-round 3-under-par 69 to win his second Georgia Super Senior Championship by two strokes over a pair of players. The ninth edition of this competition took place at Heron Bay Golf Club, August 1-2.
Leonard’s 7-under-par 137 (68-69) total was two strokes better than two players – Don Russell of Atlanta (69-70) and Mike Jackson, Sr., of Martinez (69-70) – who both finished at 5-under-par 139 for runner-up honors.
The victory was Leonard’s second Georgia Super Senior title in three years. He first won the event in 2014 at Barnsley Resort in Adairsville.
“It was my second Super Senior win,” said Leonard. “I hit it pretty solid and I hit most of the greens most of the time. I putted really well too, so that helped.”
Ernie Venet of Moultrie finished fourth overall at 4-under-par 140 (73-67). Two players tied for fifth at 3-under-par 141, including Frank Perry of Fayetteville (71-70) and Frank Costanzo of Savannah (71-70). Rob Lauer of Newnan came in seventh at 2-under-par 142 (73-69), and Taylor Adams of St. Simons Island finished eighth at 1-under-par 143 (68-75). Rounding out the overall top 10 are three at even-par 144 – Terry Montford of Savannah (73-71), Ron Holtzman of Roswell (72-72) and Steve Schwartz of Savannah (72-72).
Leonard was one of three past champions competing this week. Joining Leonard was the defending champion and two-time winner (2013, 2015) Don Marsh of Johns Creek, who finished at 3-over-par 147 (71-76) in a tie for 14th. Dick Van Leuvan of Atlanta, winner in 2012, tied for 36th at 10-over-par 154 (78-76).
Randy Berry of Roswell won flight one at 5-over-par 149 (75-74). In flight two, Wayne Hudgins of LaGrange topped the flight at 7-over-par 151 (73-78).
