SUNSET, S.C. – The Augusta University women’s golf team tied with Florida State and Virginia Tech for eighth place on Tuesday afternoon in the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee. The event was scheduled for three days of stroke play, but round three was suspended due to inclement weather on Tuesday.
Hosted by the Clemson Tigers on the par-72, 6,260-yard course at Lake Keowee, the tournament started Sunday and featured 18 teams with five ranked in the top 25 including No. 6 Florida State, No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 14 Auburn, No. 15 Virginia, and No. 18 Michigan State. The field also includes six other top 50 teams in No. 26 Purdue, 29th-ranked Illinois, No. 42 Tennessee, 45th-ranked Augusta, and No. 50 Virginia Tech. The 53rd-ranked Aggies, No. 56 LSU, 58th-ranked Indiana, No. 59 Kentucky, 61st-ranked Kansas, 95th-ranked UNCW and 99th-ranked Tulane completed the field.
No. 7 Vanderbilt held off No. 14 Auburn and won the team title at 21-under-par. Auburn took second (-13), No. 34 Clemson third (-8), No. 31 Illinois fourth (-2), and Texas A&M fifth (-1) for the top teams. The Jaguars finished the event 3-over-par to tie for eighth with FSU and VT.
Augusta sent junior Charlotte Alran, senior Cecilia Diez-Moliner, junior Linda Lundqvist, sophomore Teresa Diez-Moliner, and senior Maggie Ashmore. The Jaguars were tied for 14ththrough round one, but improved six spots on the leaderboard in round two after shooting 3-over-par and dropping seven strokes from its overall score.
Lundqvist followed up a round-one 74 (+2) with a 3-under 69, AU’s lowest score of the week, in round two. She tied for 18th overall at 1-under-par to pace Augusta, while T. Diez-Moliner shot 73 (+1) and 71 (-1) to take a T26 for the Jaguars. Alran and Ashmore each shot a 74 and 72 share a tie for 41st (+2) and C. Diez-Moliner finished T94 to round out Augusta.
The Jaguars compete at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, April 11-13, at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.
