KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Led by junior Alex Herrmann’s career-best third place finish, the Georgia State men’s golf team finished seventh on Tuesday, September 13th, 2016, at The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
Herrmann, who was tied for the lead after 36 holes, shot a final round 3-over 75 to finish just two strokes off the lead at 7-under par following rounds of 66 and 68 on Monday.
The Panthers shot a final round 305 as conditions grew more difficult to finish the 54-hole event at even par. Georgia State opened with a school-record and tournament-record 18-under par 270 on Monday morning.
“We are obviously disappointed in the way today played out,” head coach Joe Inman said. “Hopefully we can use the way we played yesterday and today as learning experiences. We know we can be a very good golf team, but you can’t get too high when you play well and we cannot allow ourselves to get too low after today. I think we will bounce back nicely next week.”
Junior Max Herrmann shot a final round 3-over 75 to finish the event at 3-over par and tied for 38th. Among those who he was tied with was senior Nathan Mallonee who shot a final round 4-over 76 to also finish the event at 3-over.
Sophomore Nick Budd, who entered the day in third place, shot a final round 80 to tie for 33rd. Freshman Egill Gunnarsson, making his collegiate debut, rounded out the line-up with a 7-over 79 to tie for 69th at 11-over.
Sophomore Nathan Williams, competing as an individual, tied for 56th at 8-over par following a final round 77.
Despite shooting a final round 6-over 294, Middle Tennessee held on for a six-stroke win at 14-under par. Ole Miss finished second at 8-under, followed by Maryland in third at 5-under. Georgia Southern finished in fourth at 4-under, while Augusta and host College of Charleston tied for fifth at 1-under, just a stroke ahead of the Panthers.
Augusta’s Jake Marriott earned low medalist honors, shooting 9-under par for a one-stroke win. Coastal Carolina’s Alfredo Ruiz finished second at 8-under par, followed by Herrmann at 7-under. Ole Miss’ Braden Thornberry and Cincinnati’s Austin Squires tied for fifth at 6-under par.
The Panthers will now travel to Arizona, September 23-25, 2016 for the Maui Jim Invitational at Mirabel Golf Club. Georgia State will serve as the host for the three-day event that includes several top 25 teams.
