GRANDE, Puerto Rico – The No. 26 GRU Augusta women’s golf team finished their first tournament of the spring 2015 season in 11th place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Wyndham Rio Mar Resort & Rio Mar Country Club – River Course, finishing 45-over par with a 909 team score.
Arkansas never let go of the lead and finished in first at 12-over par with an 876 to win the overall event. LSU took second behind the Razorbacks at +19, Iowa State finished third, Northwestern fourth, and Purdue fifth. Iowa State’s Chonlada Chayanun won the individual title at 7-under par with a 209.
Jaguar sophomore Teresa Caballer Hernani paced the Jags throughout the event and she carded an even-par 72 in her third and final round to finish in 15th place. It was Hernani’s best round of her 54 holes, where she posted three birdies. She ended the tourney at 5-over par with a 221.
Sophomore’s Jessica Hagiwood and Eunice Yi each tied for 44th overall at 15-over par with 231’s. Haigwood posted a 75 (+3) in her final round Tuesday and Yi shot a 76 (+4), both their second best rounds of the event.
Freshman Sonya Knebel took 60th in her spring debut as a Jaguar, finishing with a round-three 79 to end the tourney at 19-over par (235). Sophomore Josefine Nyqvist, who shot in the 80s in her first two rounds, returned to form and shot a 1-over 73 to in round three. Nyqvist took 63rd with a 237 (+21).
The Jaguars return to the course March 6-8 at the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational, hosted by the University of Florida at the Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, F.L.
