Seniors Seth Reeves and Richard Werenski each fired 5-under-par 67s Sunday, leading Georgia Tech to a 7-under-par total of 281 and a wire-to-wire victory at the Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club. Ollie Schniederjans shot a 73 Sunday and shared medalist honors with North Carolina’s Bailey Patrick. Werenski tied for fifth overall and Reeves tied for eleventh.
Behind that senior duo and Schniederjans, Tech expanded its lead over second-place Georgia to as many as nine strokes as the final groups began to finish. The Jackets finished 54 holes at 14-under 850, securing their seventh victory in the 25-year history of the Carpet Capital Collegiate.
“To get off to a start like we did this year was huge to where we ended up,” said Bruce Heppler, who presided over his 38th tournament victory in 18-plus years as the Yellow Jackets’ head coach. “It’s so much easier to do that than to try and chase all the time. Then you just hope somebody picks it up for you each day. Five of them have the ability to do that.”
The Bulldogs finished six shots back at 8-under 856 after posting a 5-under-par round of 283 Sunday. Kennesaw State finished +33 at 897.
“Our goal was to win the tournament, so we’re disappointed that didn’t happen, but we are leaving here with a lot of positives,” Georgia head coach Chris Haack said. Two Bulldogs finished in the top ten—Joey Garber finished tied for fourth overall and Michael Cromie tied for fifth.
Georgia Tech returns to action Saturday with their first-ever appearance in the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel, Hill, N.C. Georgia’s next tournament is in Nashville at the Ingram Invitational from Sept. 20-22. Kennesaw State is next in action on Sunday, Sept. 22, when it opens play in the Rees Jones Invitational at Haig Point G.C. in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
